Christmas is hardly the most romantic time for the special woman in your life if she spends all day with her head stuck inside a turkey fielding a host of unexpected relatives who expect to feast. Neither is her day enhanced when you produce the sort of tacky lingerie which will see you sharing the spare bedroom with one of the aforesaid relatives until you can redeem yourself with a more thoughtful gift for New Year.

The most romantic Christmas gift you can bestow on your lady is to whisk her away from the traumas of the family Christmas and take her on a cosy mini break. A country house hotel with lots of roaring log fires is the perfect choice. She can indulge in a romantic candlelit dinner followed by a special walk in the crisp white snow. Of course it’s only romantic if you remember to go with her and don’t book a mini break which includes all the relatives.

You could even make Christmas the time for a really extravagant mini break and whisk her off to Vienna for a special opera evening. A horse drawn carriage drive around the city followed by the famous chocolate sachertorte will guarantee a Christmas to remember. She probably won’t even mind if you treat her to a Vienna mini break with her best friend if she knows you loath opera. It’s the romantic gesture which counts.

If work commitments make Christmas an impossible time for a mini break or the funds just don’t run that far, then a gift of the most romantic Christmas movies is bound to impress. You can cosy up together and enjoy such delights as ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ and ‘The Great Escape.’ Don’t forget to include a box of the softest tissues for the inevitable tears.

No matter how cold your special woman gets in winter I have it on good authority that she won’t appreciate a hat with ear flaps as it will mess up her hair. Instead treat her to the softest cashmere sweater you can find, or rather her girlfriend can find, as we always get it wrong choosing clothes.

Somehow though whatever you choose is wrong if you don’t come up with a piece of jewelry, but great care needs to be taken here. If she is expecting the hinted for diamond ring and opens a box to find a brooch best suited for her Granny, you could well be back in the spare room again. You can evade the ring you know she is after by presenting an eternity ring instead, as the ultimate romantic gift.
