Whakatane is the main tourism hub for the Bay of Plenty, on New Zealand's east coast. The numerous attractions, in and around this small New Zealand town, make it a magnet for thrill-seekers, as well as those searching for peace and quiet in a relaxing atmosphere. Apart from sea and sand, and a nearby active volcano, the Whakatane area has protected forests, extensive agricultural land, and crystal clear inland waterways, with pure spring water that is bottled for export. Whether you are a lone traveller, or touring with a family, a visit to Whakatane will ensure that you are never bored.
History and Culture
The Maori language and culture is strongly evident in the region, and the Maori make up 40% of the present population. There is evidence that the first Polynesian inhabitants arrived on these shores 3,000 years ago. Visitors can follow a "Heritage Trail" that leads to Maori pa sites, the fortified villages of the past, and hear the tales of myth and legend, telling of the first people who landed on the shores of what is now known as New Zealand.
Family activities
Whakatane is the perfect destination for families. Ohope Beach is safe for children, and the area has many playgrounds to keep them amused, if ever they should tire of the beach. Failing that, they can get lost in "The Amazing Maze'n Maize".
The maize is grown in a 6 hectare (12 acre) plot every year, and over 8 km (5 miles) of paths are cut to form a maze, with a different theme each time. There are lots of silly games along the way, and "Kernels of Knowledge" with quizzes, among many other activities. Children love it and, although the walk takes 45 minutes, most children can make it last much, much longer. Naturally, "The Amazing Maze'n Maize" is only available in the maize growing season, which extends from the 26 December to the end of April.
Another favorite activity for children is found at "Blueberry Corner", where they serve tongue-tingling, natural fruit ice creams. Visitors can also taste fresh blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, all picked daily, as well as enjoying such culinary delights as freshly baked blueberry muffins, with blueberry jellies and sauces, and even blueberry chocolate.
Fishing
Whakatane is one of New Zealand's top fishing destinations, whether in rivers, from beaches, or deep out in the ocean. For trout fishers, there are the inland waterways of the Urewera National Park, where both brown and rainbow trout are found. Surf fishing is also possible from most beaches,
