Reflections: Least favorite RPG characters

by Adriana Disano

Created on: August 27, 2010

Oh my, my least favorite RPG characters. Looking back on the years, I've grinded through as many RPGs as the next girl. But I always seemed more immersed in the characters than my friends, like I was more emotionally invested in them. And I was more heartbroken when developers would introduce a nuisance into a perfectly good game, effectively ruining the storyline-or at least the likability of their love interest and friends.

So who were some of my least favorite RPG characters growing up?

Xelha - Baten Kaitos (GC)

Number one has to be Xelha from the original Baten Kaitos. When it comes to plot, Baten Kaitos isn't exactly the shining star, but it was an RPG that captured your heart nonetheless. All except for Xelha, of course. Her voice was like grinding metal against metal. And her character was the mary sue to end all mary sues. Not to mention the fact that she played a key role in the storyline, and could easily be surpassed by the game's other magic character, Mizuti. The fact that the "final battle" forced you to use her surprised us all, because our decks weren't ready. Frankly, we'd ignored them ever since we had enough members in our party to disclude hers.

Zelos - Tales of Symphonia (GC)

In the early days of Gamecube RPGs, there was the hit that was Tales of Symphonia. I played that game all of three times, and not once did I enjoy the antics put on by obvious female fanservice character Zelos. He seemed to charm all the ladies in the game, even those who were in denial of it, and pairings with him were shipped all over the internet. He was the Lady Gaga of male RPG characters of the time-wildly popular, but some just don't get it.

Sophia Esteed - Star Ocean 3 (PS2)

Oh, Sophia. You ruined what could have been a perfectly nice romantic interest for Fayt. The irritating voice and personality were probably what did you in. Not only that, but you were a stereotype I just couldn't get past-the innocent childhood friend. I was enfuriated when I got Sophia's ending in SO3. I'll have you know, Sophia, that Maria was far more appealing than you! And, er, the fact that I had a little crush on Maria doesn't have anything to do with that!

Tear Grants - Tales of The Abyss (PS2)

Tear gets a special spot in my heart for being the most overly done character I have ever had the misfortune to have to go through an entire game with. Not only is she the primary healer, but she's also important to the plot. All of that makes her presence almost impossible
