When you are getting used to it, the world of online writing will appear quite strange. You will come across terms like SEO, keywords and keyword density. Though it might be difficult to get used to it, the online writing style is rather basic and simplified.
Several factors affect the online writing style. The most important thing to consider is that readers use their monitor to enjoy an article. Reading large pieces of information online can be tiring.
Further, most people use search engines to come across online content. If you want to ensure a large audience for your pieces, you have to get used to search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.
ONLINE WRITING – THE BASICS
Be concise. This is the first rule of online writing. If you want to gain popularity and readers, keep it short, understandable and straight to the point.
Each paragraph should express a single idea. Managing to keep it a sentence-long is even better.
Try to keep sentences short, as well. A long, convoluted sentence will be difficult to grasp right away. If you force your reader to go back to the beginning, you risk losing your audience.
WHY IS SEO SO IMPORTANT FOR ONLINE WRITERS?
SEO involves a set of techniques which help for the better positioning of content in search engine results.
Each writer wants to have a bigger audience. A large number of website visitors come across the specific content via a search.
SEO involves some programming but the manner in which the content is written will play a major role, as well. Make sure that you write unique, highly specialized and useful articles.
Including keywords in your articles is another strategy you can use. Keywords are the single words or phrases that people use when searching for a specific topic. The number of times these keywords appear in your articles is known as keyword density.
To rank well, you need to select keywords that few sites are competing for. If you select a very popular and broad topic, chances are that you will have difficulties ranking among the top search engine results.
Keyword analysis tools are available online. These will help you determine how many people use a specific keyword and how many websites present information on the specific topic.
TITLES AND SUBTITLES
Headlines are very important.
Select catchy and appealing headlines, which contain well-selected keywords.
Subheadings will also increase your article’s quality. They will help readers understand what the coming paragraphs are about. Further, search engines use subheadings to determine the themes that an article discusses.
BULLETED LISTS
To further increase readability, add bulleted lists instead of large, descriptive paragraphs.
Bulleted lists, just like subheadings, increase readability and enhance the experience of your website visitors. People reading online want to get to useful information effortlessly. Bulleted lists allow them to do just that.
STRONG, ACTIVE VERBS
Forget about the usage of ‘is’ and its forms. When you have to write short sentences, you need powerful and active verbs.
Selecting the most suitable verbs will make your article more dynamic and enjoyable. Your verbs have to be specific and descriptive to allow readers form a mental picture.
Web writing can be extremely enjoyable, once you understand its basics and internalize the rules. Keeping it short and simple does not signify being plain and unoriginal. Make use of your vocabulary and creativity to deliver the best you are capable of.
