Why is LOLcats so popular?

by Christyl Rivers

Cats Rule, Dogs Drool; LOLcats in a Cats Cradle of Civilization history revealed.

We love cats!  This is the reason why LOL cats, Laughing Out Loud Cats, is so popular.  If you ever had a cat, or rather, if you have ever been owned by a cat, you have seen some really funny stuff.  Cats are funnier than dogs because their natural dignity and haughty superiority is easy to disparage by unworthy humans.  And they are cute.

For those of you who have been cat- napping under a rock, LOL Cats is an Internet phenomenon that posts great photos of cats with cat spelling, cat antics, cat culinary expertise,  cat shenanigans, and cat values.  It is morphing still, with more and more cat history, cat histamines, and cat hissy fits, every day.

A long time ago, the Egyptians mummified cats for their ever-lasting grain protection prowess.  Even in the afterlife, cats are better at rodent control than human zombies are.  In fact, in the coming zombie apocalypse, I will have my cats at my side when zombies attack.  That's just common sense.

After being worshiped as Bast, aka Bastet, in the middle east, cats went on to catch rats in the middle ages and prevent plague.  The church could not deal with anyone having real power in the world, so cats became scapegoats, and many were burned alive and hanged. In protest the cats sneaked out to the barn and withheld LOL cats from humankind for another 500 years.

Too bad, for all those people who had their homes overrun by rats, and the fleas carried by those rats that brought Black Death.  But no one had much access to the sacred papyrus scrolls that held the truth of kitties, and , well, ashes, ashes, all fall down.  In protest cats sneaked out to the barn and withheld LOL cats from humankind for another 500 years.

Later came the invention of Jazz, which morphed like a cat out of a paper bag into Rock and Roll.  Every one who was anyone became a cool cat, or a cool kitty.  They were so hep they soon graduated to hippies, and thus cats brought the idea of peace.  As the embodiment of serenity personified in the way they nap, it's funny we didn't catch on sooner. .  But once Make love not war became the motto of an age, cats settled down for another well earned nap.

Also born, and or continuing in popularity, were Felix the cat, Top Cat, Sylvester the cat, Garfield, Josey and the Pussy Cats, Barbara Streisand as a Cat, Bill the Cat, and apologies for whomever is left out, I get my work ethic advise from my cats. The 60’s also brought us one lame attempt after another for all Catty women to claw their way into Batman’s good graces, but to no avail.  No cat -bat hybrids are yet discovered, although they will be categorically awesome when they swoop in.

Some time went by and in the mid 1970’s cats awesome power arose again in the poster of the time that spoke the values of the disco generation.  The poster, with a cat hanging by her paws, was captioned: " Hang In There, Baby."  It inspired many of those who had to endure disco until it morphed into cool 80’s techno rock, and famous Leo and Cat woman, Madonna, showed up to inspire baby kitten Ga Ga, one supposes.  The 70's and 80's also gave us Cat Stevens, The year of the Cat,  and that cool cat from RED DWARF.

Finally, the invention of the Internet by someone with a lap top kitty ensured that LOL cats would at last arrive.  People sent in their photos of important kittehs, and internet memes,  with cat like agility and good grace showed up.  LOL cats is a fine place to prowl.   Cat lovers, cat haters, viral video hackers, reliable fur fetish regulars, pussy footing photo-shoppers, and bad spellers all found a place to belong.

Visit LOL cats and prepare to waste the whole afternoon, or ta gettah ninth life, feline-nally.
