Why it is so easy to let your eating habits get out of control

by Michelle Wilkinson

Eating is something that you have to do every day in order to survive. There is no escaping the fact that whatever size you are, you need to eat. Not only does food taste good, it also provides you with energy and with the vital nutrients and vitamins that your body needs for you to stay healthy. However, a lot of the food that you buy in supermarkets today isn’t that good for you, since much of it is crammed full of sugar, salt, fat and chemicals that make you crave the same foodstuffs again. It is obviously hard to control your eating habits when you constantly want more.

If you eat a lot of junk food you tend to get the initial high that sugar gives you, as your energy levels rise rapidly, but this is soon followed by a crash, so that you need something else to perk you up again. Usually, you will turn to exactly the same kind of junk food, as it is tasty and makes you feel happier, for a short time, anyway. Junk food is relatively cheap and is extremely convenient. All you have to do is unwrap it and you have a snack or a meal ready to eat. Fruits and vegetables just don’t hold the same appeal for most people.

Once you’ve developed a taste for junk food it can be extremely difficult to break a junk food habit and there are some people who profess that they are addicted to it. Seeing as though the number of obese individuals has been on the rise for quite some time it is clear that there are quite a few people who have completely lost control of their eating habits, eating far more than they need. It is easy to do, as this is a society where many people don’t bother to make time for exercise and can’t be bothered to cook when they can simply pick up a meal from a fast food restaurant.

You can quite quickly forget that food provides you with sustenance and isn’t just something to keep you preoccupied when you’re bored, lonely or sad. Although you may have difficulty controlling the amount of food you eat and with eating the right kinds of food you still have to eat at least three times a day and so there is always going to be the temptation to eat the ‘bad’ foods and to keep on eating more. You can’t just give up on food completely, as you could if alcohol or cigarettes were your vice, which is why you have to find your own way to exert control over what you eat.
