Unmanned by Lois Greiman is the fourth book in the Christina McMullen psychologist mystery series. This book has a lot of excitement and romance as the mystery, murder and mayhem heat up as well as the romance.
Christina is used to having men attracted to her, but not used to them dropping dead at her feet. Enter Will Swanson a good looking carpenter, a man she meets at a gas station, who then finds Christina’s home and then gets shot near her garage.
When Christina tells sexy detective Jack Rivera about the man who gets killed in her driveway, he is certain that she was the target. But unable to figure out who is trying to kill her (she goes through the list of her clients trying to come up with one), Christina is soon sure that Will himself was the intended victim.
Soon Christina’s often married, irresponsible brother Pete shows up bringing nothing but problems with him. Seems this time, Pete has a pregnant fianceé, has “borrowed” money and has mobsters after him. He has also left a trail of angry ex-girlfriends behind, some of whom may be out for vengeance. It may or may not be a coincidence that Will Swanson looked a lot like Pete. He may have been killed by accident.
Unmanned is an exciting fun book with a bright, feisty protagonist. The author has created a book that is fast paced with just enough mystery and romance to keep the reader interested. Christina is too nosy for her own good and often frustrates her on again off again beau, Jack Rivera, an LAPD lieutenant, who truly doesn’t know quite how to deal with her.
Although Christina does spend some time with her patients in this book, for the most part she works as a detective trying to help the brother who has many issues and has certainly caused her a great deal of misery.
A fun series, Unmanned does its best to continue the string of Christina McMullen hit books, and it definitely succeeds. It is a fast read that never slows down. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, and the story is well thought out and the characters well defined. We good a large glimpse into Christina’s family and maybe some insight into the reasons Christina is so high strung and particular. I am looking forward to reading another book in the series. Although each book stands on its own, it may best to read them in order because previous murders are mentioned.
