Why it is important to remember there is more to life than work

To most people, it is pretty obvious that there is more to life than work, but some people are so committed to their job that they are unable to see beyond their next promotion or pay rise. When you live for work you can’t always appreciate the more important things in life, such as family and friends because all you care about is doing a good job, getting yourself noticed and reaching the top. This isn’t a particularly healthy way to live your life, as the chances are you won’t take the time to look after your general health and well-being.

Ambition may be what’s driving you to work longer hours than you need to and to suck up to the boss, but does working all the hours god sends really make you happy? You can’t spend your whole life at work and so what do you do in your free time? Maybe you just take your work home with you, but if you do that when do you get to see your friends and relatives? Perhaps you don’t have many friends because you’re so preoccupied with your career and can’t be bothered to make the effort to stay in touch with old friends or to meet new people, while your family probably never gets to see you either.

It’s all well and good to keep yourself shut off from everyone when you’re flying high and everything’s going well, but what about when everything comes crashing down around your feet? You will find yourself alone and with no one there to offer you support or help. You may think you can go through life by yourself, focusing all your energy on your career, but there is a good chance you will be left feeling lonely, which often leads to depression. You don’t want to find yourself becoming ill simply because you’ve been completely focused on your career at the expense of everything and everyone else.

It is therefore important to remember that there is more to life than work so that you can make the most of all life has to offer. If you don’t you will probably end up lonely, depressed and your health could start to deteriorate if you don’t take the necessary steps to remain in good physical condition. Although your career may bring with it status and money, these won’t matter that much when you are unable to enjoy your success because you don’t have any time to or because you’re ill.
