I work for a cell phone company. Time and time again I see parents call highly irritated because they "trusted" their children to use the phone only as an emergency phone. Time and time again that trust has been deeply violated.
People just assume that their children are "responsible adults" when in truth they are just kids. Especially girls. They tend to be a little on the gabby side. This is very normal. But if you assist her by giving her a cell phone you are setting yourself up for failure.
I do believe that it is ok to give a kid a cell phone. Usually around the time they are in middle school or junior high. By that age they have their own responsibilities. Games, meetings, friends. They need a way to coordinate their own lives and keep parents up to date on changes. I have also found this to help with parents worries by knowing they can talk to their kids at any moment.
But if you do choose to give your child a cell phone please, please, do the responsible thing. Unlimited. Unlimited minutes, unlimited text messaging, and unlimited photos. These are all things your kids want and will do. Save a headache and fight and just give it to them to begin with.
