Invited to dinner by my future German mother-in-law, Marie won my heart forever with this unique and one of a kind salad. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser and so very easy to put together. Wilted lettuce is the go to and end all complement for just about any dinner especially on short notice. Young and old will come back for more and stand in line for secrets to this tasty recipe.
Simplicity is the key to this very basic and nutritious salad. A trip to the grocery store won't be necessary because all the ingredients are found in just about every kitchen. Total cost runs about $3.00 and serves four people easily.
- Ingredients -
Large head of Iceberg lettuce, 4 slices of bacon, 1/3 cup of water, 1/3 cup of white vinegar or apple cider, one medium onion -any kind, 1/3 cup of sugar, pinch of salt and pepper.
- Recipe -
1. Chop up a large head of Iceberg lettuce, washed off and dried, into a large bowl while frying up 4 slices of bacon in frying pan.
2. Save bacon drippings in frying pan.
3. Mix 1/3 cup of water with 1/3 cup of white or apple cider vinegar and set aside.
4. Add roughly chopped medium onion and cooled off crumbled bacon to lettuce bowl.
5. Sprinkle 1/3 cup sugar on top of lettuce with a pinch of salt and pepper.
6. Carefully add water and vinegar mixture to hot bacon drippings in frying pan until bubbling hot.
7. Carefully pour hot bacon drippings mixture over lettuce.
8. Mix well and serve immediately.
