Christian celebrations: National Bible Week

by Opal Elaine Moyer

Created on: August 23, 2010

Most people may not have ever heard of National Bible Week.  Some people may actually not even think that it really exists. It can be certain that some people in this country don't want it to.  However, National Bible Week does exist and is celebrated all over the United States and in some foreign countries, too.  So, just what is National Bible Week and when does it take place?  National Bible Week is actually sponsored by the Layman's National Bible Association.  It has been observed since 1941 and it takes place every November, during the week of Thanksgiving.  The purpose of National Bible Week is to promote the reading and study of the bible.  It is obseved by many interfaith groups.  There are events that actually take place throughout the country during this week.  Missionary groups observed this celebration overseas, taking it to foreign countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.

The Bible Association website (http://www.backtothebible.org ) offers many suggestions for observing National Bible Week.  On the website there are included games, crafts, stories and other ideas to pique a childs interest in the reading and studying of the Bible.  This can well be done as a family, as family Bible time is important, too.  Family Bible readings, on a regular basis can help keep a child reading his/her bible for a lifetime.

The amazing thing about the Bible is that it still exists, today.  Despite effort of some people to destoy or abolish it, it is still here.  The Bible is printed in virtually every language and there are several different versions, or translations of the Bible.  Many may disagree which translation is the right and proper one, however, the Bible has even endured this; it is an eternal book.  It is also counted as one of the most read books in the world.

The endurance of the Bible is enough reason to have a national week devoted to it, but there is more.  The inspiration, comfort and encouragement are also great reasons why there should be and is a National Bible Week.  So, on this next November, during Thanksgiving week, don't forget to observe and enjoy National Bible Week.
