Despite what some people would like to believe and see happen, deporting 15 million illegal aliens is an impossible solution to America's problem. Relocating a group of people the size of the combined populations of Switzerland and Austria - spread out over 3.7 million square miles - is not only impossible logistically, but would financially cripple federal and state law enforcement. Others have suggested increasing the border patrol by 50%. Unfortunately, the government already beat them to that idea - it has actually tripled in the past decade, to little effect. Still others want to built a huge wall along the entire southern border, deny citizenship to children of illegals born in the United States, or a myriad of other equally unenforceable or unconstitutional proposals.
To truly fix the problem of illegal immigration, the United States first needs to understand the causes of it, and what it can realistically do to bring the issue under control and properly manage correcting it.
When most people talk about illegal immigration problems, they are referring to the influx of Mexican immigrants across our southern border. While there are many illegal immigrants of all nationalities, America's illegal immigration problem is almost always seen as a Mexican immigration problem.
To be fair, the majority of illegals coming to the United States are Mexican. But that begs the question: what is going on in Mexico that makes their citizens want to keep coming illegally, and often under dangerous conditions, to take jobs well below minimum wage?
If your neighbor's house is on fire, what would you do? Try to help them put it out and rebuild, or to let it burn and do your best to keep them out of your yard? Make no mistake - Mexico is on fire. With a generally corrupt government and a ruling oligarchy, Mexico has not been able to take advantage of NAFTA and enter into the global marketplace. Public schools are a joke, and rural unemployment and poverty abound. As their neighbor, it is in our vital interest to help Mexico develop a real, functioning economy with skilled and semi-skilled workers. With its close proximity to the United States, Mexico is in a great position to beat out China and Taiwan for manufacturing contracts. But they haven't gotten there yet. If we can work to help create decent jobs in Mexico, the desire to illegally enter the United States will steeply decline.
But what about those illegal aliens already here? We need to take a common sense realistic approach
