Exercise and the art of 'pole dancing'

Pole dancing is nothing new. Exotic dancers across the globe have been swinging their svelte figures around them in strip clubs for years. Recently, however, there has been an increase in the use of the pole for mainstream, aerobic exercises. What was once reserved for exotic dancers has now been elevated to a form of dancing which includes moves originated from gymnastics techniques.

Although in the United States, pole dancing has been given an unfavorable reputation, more artistically inclined versions of the dance do exist in China, where the poles are used in cabaret shows and circus performances with absolutely no erotic connotation.

Despite its negative reputation, pole dancing is becoming an increasingly popular form of mainstream exercise. The moves often develop upper body strength by using one's body as resistance. Among the health benefits of pole dancing are improved muscular endurance and more precise coordination.
