An introduction to urban exploration

Urban exploration is actually a very interesting hobby, in the sense it allows those involved to explore and get in touch with their adventurous side, but it also helps them to stay fit, as exploration (especially in the urban-type setting) reinforces vigorous walking and constant movement in order to stay caught-up and alert of all that's going on around you.

In conducting a day of urban exploration, I recommend you take these items:

• A comfortable, but spacious backpack to carry the upcoming mentioned items
• Water
Healthy snacks (i.e; nuts, dried fruit, trail mix, etc.)
• A map of the city (or a blown-up version of the specific area you're exploring)
• A cell phone
• Money for unforeseen expenses or in case you decide to check out area-specific dining facilities
• A portable music player of some sort, if you like to listen to music as you walk
• A camera
• Comfortable shoes
• A light jacket or sweatshirt, just in case it gets chilly
• Extra socks (you know how wet pot-holes and urban areas go hand in hand)
• Any other items you feel you may need, such as a first-aid kit, radio, etc.

In most cases, urban exploration is the most fun way to learn your way around a new city. I personally recommend going to the "lesser developed" parts of the cities. No, I don't mean the ghettos...I mean areas like the Chinatown or Little Italy districts. There's usually a great variety of shops and food stores in these areas. Museums or historical areas are also great places of any city to explore. Take some time to work your way through these as well. There's a lot to be learned and seen, especially if you look close enough.

But my personal favorite way to explore a big city is by asking around. Talking to locals to see what their favorite spots of the area are. But remember, don't forget to use common sense. And although you may come across some pretty shady individuals, I can guarantee (from personal experiences of my own) that they will help you find something in that city to either visit or explore that you won't soon forget.
