The viability of Avon as a good business opportunity

Is Avon viable as an oppourtunity to make money with your own business?  The District Managers you encounter will tell you, absolutely, yes.  They will tell you anyone can do it.  Why, everyone has friends, right?  And all of those friends have friends, right?  Why, all you need to do is ask your friends to tell their friends that you sell Avon, and you'll be able to quit your job and live happily ever after, right?

Not quite.

Like any other person starting their own business, you're chances of success depend on whether you have the personality to really make a go of it.  It's true that Avon is internationally known, and that they have good-quality products, which at least reduces the chances of you having doors slammed in your face.  But it's also true that, just like any other business, you need to be hard-working and have a talent and a passion for what you are doing.

If you think skin care regimens are a waste of money, you're probably not the best person to be selling Avon.  People can usually tell when someone doesn't believe in what they're selling.  So unless you believe in beauty products, or are a very, very good liar, you won't have luck going door-to-door.

Are you a confident, bubbly person who thinks that every person she meets is a potential new friend?  If you have this outlook on life, you will probably do very well selling Avon.  Being able to approach strangers confidently is not a skill every person has.  Some people are born salespeople.  If you're one of those people, and also believe in Avon products, you have the ability to make a lot of money selling Avon, and it's definitely worth a try!

Remember: if you decide to sell Avon products you are in the same boat as anyone else starting her own business; you need to be willing to work long and hard, focus on your strengths and deal with your weaknesses, and get out there and promote yourself!  Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because the Avon infrastructure is already in place that you will have an easy time of it.  Try asking anyone who has started operating their own franchise - their famous parent company might be posting millions in profit each year, but they're probably behind the counter 12 hours a day just to pay the bills.  If you like the work, you'll be able to do it - so good luck!
