Poetry: Disillusioned youth

by Susie M. Arviso

All it takes is lack of love

Steady slaps, rejecting shoves

To take away a child's trust

To give him pain and boxing gloves

By the time I was twelve years old

I'd lost desire to live and hope

Living was a burden to tote

Pain and darkness was my abode

Left broken unequipped for life

Broken, damaged, scarred from strife

My youthful soul crying out in the night

With hope of seeing the dawning light

Then one day God came to me

With love He set my spirit free

He soothed away the misery

Flying finally like an eagle free

He set my feet on solid ground

Extinguishing pain, no longer bound

Disillusionment changed to free and sound

My youthful life was turned around
