Before air conditioning, fans were the main source of cooling, and ceiling fans were the preferred method. They have been around for a long time in one form or another, because they do a great job of cooling a room and circulating the air. If you have been in a home improvement store lately, then you know that there is a style for every décor.
Air conditioning is wonderful. We use it everyday in the summer, in homes, offices and vehicles. The downside is that is uses a lot of energy to operate, and consequently, it runs up the utility bill in the summer months. Ceiling fans, on the other hand, use less energy and may very well be all we need to keep our homes cool.
We sometimes get into the habit of turning on the central air when other more economical and energy efficient methods might work just as well. Ceiling fans circulating the air in a room provides a gentle breeze and cooling. Combined with a few open windows, it will keep the room comfortable. They can also be adjusted to give you just the right amount of air circulation and breeze. Not only will your ceiling fan help in the summer, it will do double duty in your home in the winter months as well. By reversing the rotation of the blades, and setting the speed of the fan on low, you can push the warmer air that rises to the ceiling back down to the living area of the room where it will do the most good.
Air that is circulated throughout the room is kept fresher and less humid, possibly helping to eliminate mold and mildew and musty smells in the room. Ceiling fans are also a great help in drying out furniture and carpets that have been shampooed.
If you are looking for low maintenance, ceiling fans are it. Unlike air conditioners, there are no filters to clean or replace. Fans require occasional dusting and, if you have a lighting attachment which is handy, an occasional light bulb replacement.
If you are using an air conditioner, window, or central air unit, the addition of ceiling fans will help by allowing you to keep the thermostat at a higher temperature, allowing the room to stay cool while not overworking your air conditioner.
While ceiling fans did go out of fashion for awhile, they are actually making a comeback, especially when people realize that there are no end of options and benefits. Today there is a fan style for every room from the kids’ rooms to a Casablanca inspired sun porch.
