Lots of parents are now waiting until after the birth of their new bundle of joy before knowing whether they will paint the nursery pink or blue. While this can be fun for some, it can make buying that perfect baby shower gift seem like a daunting task. However, it doesn’t have to be. With just a little extra thought and time spent scouring the baby section (and who doesn’t love looking at stuff for babies?), it is easy to find something special and perfect to welcome the little one to the world.
The easiest thing to do is stick to gender neutral colors while shopping. Everyone knows green and yellow, but white or beige or black would also be appropriate. Another tip is to avoid the baby pastels and go right for the bright primary colors or bold black and white patterns that will catch baby’s eye. Along with the gender neutral colors, you can look for blankets, creepers, or other soft items that have little to no embellishment, which usually denote some kind of gender.
Another idea is buying baby basics that go beyond gender lines. This could include items like a microwavable bottle sterilizer, freezer packs for keeping bottles cold on the go, or perhaps two or three of your little one’s favorite bottles. Bibs and burp cloths are also something every parent needs in abundance, and when baby is spitting up, no one really cares whether they are pink or blue, although they are easy to find in gender neutral colors, just like clothes and blankets. Bath time products are also good. Soap and lotion, washcloths and towels, or even a few bath toys make good gifts since baby will be ready for them before you know it.
Toys are good too. Even though it will be a few weeks before baby plays with them, it never hurts to have them on hand. Rattles, plush toys, and teething rings are all good options. When the little darling all of a sudden develops the need to gnaw their fingers, Mom and Dad will be only too glad to have something on hand as an alternative without making a dash for the store.
The idea of what is appropriate for a baby shower is constantly changing. They are not only for women anymore; the daddy-to-be and his friends are becoming welcome guests. Baby showers are also not just for baby anymore either. Sometimes the most perfect gift is not one for baby, but one for mom and dad. After all, their lives are about to completely change. Now might be the best time to buy them a gift card to a favorite restaurant or to the movie theater for one more night out without worrying about diaper bags or a baby sitter. A gift basket catered to the couple is also a nice treat. If they are movie buffs, how about a variety of flavored popcorn with a DVD or two? Are they coffee lovers or fans of chocolate? Do they enjoy cooking? The possibilities are endless.
Buying a baby shower gift doesn’t have to be stressful, even when you don’t know if you’re buying for a boy or a girl. It is a wonderful time for the parents-to-be and their family and friends and perhaps the best gift you could give is to tell everyone to just relax and enjoy the moment.
