Of all the things that we are afraid of, cell phones is probably at the bottom of our list. The very bottom. But in Stephen Kings book Cell, that is changed. King has found a way to get into our minds, cause us to fear the thing that we use the most. Our cell phones. The book is similar to movies such as Dawn of the Dead…But much more complicated, and far more terrifying. King took an item used by Americans more than anything, and used it to create heartless, horrible monsters. Using cell phones, King creates scary, zombie-like creatures.
From the beginning of the story, you cannot put the book down. The story is captivating, amazing and one you could read straight through. You feel a liking for the main character, Clay. You also sympathize with him when he does not know what has happened to his wife and son, who both own cell phones. Throughout the book you meet a very interesting cast of characters, such as Alice, a young teenage girl who joins Clay and Tom on their quest to escape the carnage and ruin of the city. The characters are likeable, and they are people you can relate to in many ways. They seem like normal people, as characters in books are supposed to.
There are a couple plot twists in the story, but they make sense and follow the story, and no detail is forgotten from the beginning of the story. The story makes sense, and the plot twists are not out of place. This, much like The Stand is a very interesting twist on the normal apocalyptic/zombie story.
The book keeps your attention all the way through, and keeps you interested. It is definitely one of those books you just can’t put down. It’s very well written, and makes sense. This book made me almost too afraid to talk on my cell, for fear of becoming like the creatures King has created in this stunning book.
This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good book. I enjoyed reading it, and will probably be reading it again soon. The ending was kind of sad, but happy in a strange way. If that makes any sense. This is a book I could read over and over again and not get bored of. I would especially recommend this book to those who are huge fans of horror, zombie and apocalyptic stories, as this combines all of those.
