College introduces a whole new world of challenges, including staying fit and eating healthy. Students tend to pull all-nighters and party a lot more than they normally would while at home, and schedules are easily disrupted by meetings and events. In order to keep yourself healthy and in shape, follow these guidelines:
Walk to Class
Walking around campus is the easiest way to get your exercise in. Depending on the size of your college, you could easily walk a few miles each day just by using your feet instead of the car. It has been proposed that 10,000 steps each day will keep you in good health. In order to keep you on track, try investing in a pedometer. 10,000 steps is easily manageable and is equivalent to about 5 miles of walking.
Not only will the walking improve your overall health, but it will also save you money in the long run because you won’t have to pay for gas. That extra money could be saved, or you could use it to reward yourself with a night out at a restaurant with your friends! Remember, staying consistent is key. Start walking to class the very first day, and you will see that it becomes a habit.
Use the Recreation Center
Most colleges have a recreation center available to anyone attending college. These buildings offer free weights, gyms, and some even have a swimming pool and track. Take the time to tour your school’s recreation center to find out what is all available. Also, ask the front desk person when the down time is so that you can be sure to get a machine when you come in to exercise.
Before you go to the recreation center, make an outline for yourself. Having a plan beforehand will encourage you and keep you on track. Not only that, but you can use your plan to develop a workout journal so that you can see all the progress you are making. Don’t forget to do a proper warm up and cool down with your workout. Try using the recreation center at least 3 to 4 days a week to stay in tip-top shape.
Play Intramurals
Playing intramural sports is both fun and healthy! Grab some of your new college friends and get a sand volleyball or basketball team together. Since games usually run about an hour, you will get your exercising in for the day, as well as have some fun competing with teams across campus. Check with your college to see what sports are offered and at what times. There is something for everyone!
Watch What You Eat
Junk food is present all over college, so do yourself a favor and stay away from it right off the bat. Stock your dorm room with fresh fruit and foods that are high in fiber and protein. When you eat at the cafeteria, stay away from anything that has been heavily fried or cooked in grease. Visit the salad bar a few times each week and watch your portions. It is very tempting to keep going back for more when the buffet is sitting right in front of you, but do your best to only eat what your body can handle. Don’t forget about the five food groups! Also, try drinking water or lemonade instead of soda. All of these little changes will keep your body energized and ready for the busy course load you have.
Starting off on the right foot is the most crucial thing when it comes to staying healthy. If you struggle with motivation, find some friends to join you! In addition to the guidelines above, be sure to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night so that your body can maintain a healthy metabolism.
