Selena Gomez's rise to stardom

by Thu Nguyen

Created on: August 19, 2010

Selena Marie Gomez is not a stranger to the entertainment world. In fact, her role takes us back to the days when Barney & Friends were singing. You probably remember her as one of the cutie touting with the purple dinosaur in his sing-a-longs. Over the years, this young lady went on to start in Spy Kids, voice over for Horton Hears a Who and even signed on with Disney to star as Alex Russo in the Wizards of Waverly Place. From there on her musical contributions as well as media appearances has skyrocketed.

It wasn’t until recently that she made her debut in theatrical movies with Ramona and Beezus, a popular novel about two sisters written by Beverly Clearly. How this young woman came to be was destined, as there could be no other way for her to go but towards the stars.

~ Birth ~

Born on July 2, 1992, the American actress and singer-songwriter originated from Texas where her father, Ricardo Gomez and an actress name Mandy Teefey had a relationship which conceived her. Named after the famous singer, Selena, is it any wonder the spirit of music still thrives in that name? Thus, what inspired and thrilled the young child to pursue the entertainment business was her mother.

It was from watching her mom get ready for shows, rehearse and put on makeup that it was all too exciting for Selena. Truly she saw the magic of show biz and before she was old enough to sign any papers, she already knew what she wanted to be. Even memorizing her mother’s lines, one day she said to her mom, 'I want to be like you.'

With that, as the projects continue to come in and completing her home school degree for high school, she pursued her dreams further and started her band Selena and The Scene. From this endeavor, her first album Kiss and Tell came. With this debut, she wanted to steer away from the lovey-dovey tunes and rocked out and she worked really hard in making it happen. Thus, it was something she didn't want to regret.

Just then this year, her new album, A Year Without Rain was also released. With a new album, a movie and still more negotiations in place, this young lady is going to be employed for a long time. At only 18, her energy, voice and sweet looks may be what we need now after the waves of our beloved Britney and Christina.
