Every dollar we spend today has to go farther than it ever has before. Budgeting for clothing can be difficult because trends change each season. Magazines show us the latest and greatest new clothing worn by celebrities that do not have to worry about price tags. Walking through a mall full of “Sale” signs can tempt even the most frugal shopper. However, there are ways to reduce the amount of money you spend on clothes. Even minor changes can produce major savings so never overlook an opportunity to change your thinking when it comes to shopping because an informed consumer is the type of consumer that saves the most money.
*Clean out your closet
This is probably the easiest and biggest way to save money on clothing. Most of us are not aware of just how much we have. Take everything out of your closet (or closets). Chances are you will find items that you did not even realize that you had purchased. If you have not worn it or it no longer fits, put it in a pile. Everything else needs to be organized. Hang all blouses together, sweaters together, etc. When you are done, you will probably find that you have several items that you can mix and match, creating new outfits. With items hung neatly and in order, it is much easier to see what they would look like with the items of clothing in the group next to them.
*Create new looks
Use existing clothing to create new looks. If you do not want flared pants anymore find a tailor or someone you know that sews, and change the leg to a boot-cut bottom. A maxi skirt can find new life when it is cut to a knee length skirt. Use as much as you can from your closet before purchasing anything else. If you liked the item enough to buy it in the first place, altering it can give it new life and give you a new look.
*Clothing Swap Parties
Clothing Swap parties are becoming increasingly popular. That pile of clothing that you made, with the items that you have not worn in over a year, can find a new home at a swap party. As well, you can find pieces of clothing to fill in gaps in your own wardrobe. If you cannot find one of these parties in your area, try to arrange one starting with your friends or relatives. Everyone loves a bargain and you cannot beat free when it comes to saving money. Check out websites such as http://www.swaporamarama.org/ or swapstyle.com for more information on clothing swap parties.
*Quality over Quantity
Whenever possible, buy quality clothing. As tempting as it may be to have seven
