Tips for handling embarrassing pictures of you on Facebook

Facebook has opened a door to your personal life and now you desperately need to close it. Why? Last night party was a blast but after 2am, you do not actually remember too much. But, as you drink your hot cup of coffee the next morning while browsing your news feed and thinking you got away with it, you get the dreaded notification; ‘You’ve been tagged’. You hands start shaking and your heart beats like a racing horse waiting anxiously for the page to load. And there you are, dancing drunk in a smokey bar showing off your brand new bra. Scream? Fade? Well, these are two solutions but thankfully, there in an easy way to make the picture go away.

In particular:

1. Remove Tag

The easiest and fastest way to make the picture invisible to other users is to remove the tag. All you need to do is to follow the tag link and click on the ‘Remove Tag’ option just beside it. Doing so, you simply remove the link attaching your name to the specific photo hiding it from the rest of your contacts. Nevertheless, removing the tag does not also delete the picture itself.

2. Contact the Uploader

Unfortunately, there is no way you can delete a photo posted by other users. But you can email them asking for the photo’s removal. Be polite and straightforward; let them know how awful it makes you feel and that it may cause problems for your work, family and social environment. Since the user is your friend, the email will do the trick and the photo will be deleted.

3. Remove/Block Contact

Nevertheless, some people actually find it funny to humiliate you and watch you suffer. Emailing them is not an option as your voice will not be heard. However, what you can do is to delete them from your friends' list. This will automatically ‘kill’ all picture tags associated to you. Moreover, if the problem insists you can also block them. To do so, click on the ‘Account’ tab and then on ‘Privacy Settings’. Wait for the page to load and click on ‘Block Lists’ tab on the bottom center of the page. Type their names or emails and click ‘Block’.

4. Flag Photo

Finally, you can flag the photo due to inappropriate material. Facebook will review your flag report and proceed to the picture’s deletion. However, if the picture is just offensive for you and does not violate Facebook’s Terms of Use, your request will not be accepted.

On the bottom end, this is just a picture. If everything else fails, try to fight it with a huge smile. When the uploader sees that you have no interest in it, then he will also lose motivation and eventually will take the photo down. Good luck!
