Inspired by the 'fashion diet craze',here are some ideas to help build a fashionable wardrobe on a budget.
Stock up on classics and layering pieces.
When you have basic pieces to mix, match and layer, the more versatile your wardrobe will be. Once you have stocked up on basics there will be more money for spending on current styles. Here are some classic piece and layering item ideas. Make sure you stick to neutral colors which will give you more flexibility while creating new ensembles. The top three colors should be black, white and brown but navy, cream and tan will work as well.
Tops:
*Camis and layering tanks-you can never have enough of these. With different styles such as built in shelf bra and lace edging, find what best fits your style. Banana Republic and Limited are great places to find these layering essentials.
*Plain sweaters-A few crew or v-neck and a couple turtleneck sweaters can be mixed and matched with different articles of clothing. Stick to basic colors and styles for maximum versatility. Make sure you get bang for your buck with sweaters as cheaply made sweaters usually don't last for more than a season.
*Plain t's, slightly fitted-Stock up on short sleeve and long sleeve styles. T-shirts go well with slacks, skirts, jeans...just about anything. You can't go wrong with Gap classic t's.
Bottoms:
*Jeans that flatter your figure-Make sure these are in 'timeless' washes. You can buy trendy jeans as your budget allows but make sure you have the basics to fall back on. Department stores like Nordstrom offer a wide range of styles and brands when it comes to denim.
*Trousers and slacks-Keep a few pairs on hand for each season. Stores like Ann Taylor and Limited offer a wide range of dressy pant styles.
*Leggings and tights-again, stick to the basics and neutral colors. These are great for layering with skirts and tunics and add another dimension to any original outfit.
*A classic skirt that flatters your figure.
*A basic black dress! Use your preferred variation, just don't get too trendy with it.
Shoes:
Start out with a pair of black and a pair of brown (or tan) of each shoe style that fits your fashion preferences. If you don't wear pumps, don't buy them-this is just a general guideline to give you ideas while building your wardrobe.
*Flip flops-Especially in warmer climates, flip flops are the perfect staple and can be worn with dressy or casual clothing.
*Open toed heels
*Pumps
*Flats
*Tall boots
Outerwear:
*A classic trench-this is one item you can get in your favorite color. A cold, rainy day needs a splash of color.
*A pea- or toggle coat. Gap and Banana Republic sell these at great quality and good prices. The style never really varies much so buy one at an end of season sale for next year's winter.
Bags:
Keep a few basic bags on hand to use with outfits that may be hard to accessorize with.
Once you have built your basic wardrobe, accessory, bag and shoe sales are the perfect low cost way to liven up your ensembles and keep your looks interesting.
When buying trendy clothing to add oomph and up-to-date looks to your wardrobe, don't be shy with color or outrageous styles as long as they fit you. Just a few new items every once in a while will keep you looking and feeling perfectly fashionable. Be smart and get creative!
