Fashion on a low budget

According to Gail Vaz-Oxlade from the TV show 'Til Debt Do Us Part, only 6% of the life expenses piece of budget pie should be allotted for fashion.  If you don't already apply this to your budget you may feel it would be difficult to do.  Here are some ways to still look great while spending less.

Buy quality.
Stores like Target and Walmart seem to have progressed when it comes to fashionable clothing at low prices.  However, the quality of the material and the construction of their clothing is not always the best.  Don't shy away from higher priced stores especially during good sales.  Do stay way from material that will fade, shrink or pill.  Quality clothing will last longer and be a worthwhile investment.  Keep in mind, sometimes the cheapest items are the most expensive investment.  Shopping quality fashion during

sales is the way to go.

Stop impulse buying.
Studies show that the average woman has 7 pairs of jeans in her closet but only wears 4.  We often go out with good intentions to search of one or two items yet return home with more.  Often, these are just impulse buys, not needs and the clothing often rests in the back of the closet.  There are two tips to help you curb your impulse buying.

1.  Take inventory of your wardrobe before you go shopping.  Don't buy it if you already have it and stick to what you actually need and will get plenty of use out of.

2.  If you see an item you don't really need but feel you can't live without, think it through.  Consider the quality, price, how it will go with other outfits and how often you think you will wear it.  Rational thinking cuts out most impulse buying.  Albeit, impulse buying in moderation is okay as long as it doesn't interfere with your budget.  Occasional splurges can keep a shopaholic sane!

Don't use store credit cards.
Just like one of the steps in 'Til Debt, don't be afraid to destroy your clothing store credit cards.  These can initiate impulse buying by causing you to think you have money to spend that really isn't there.  Even if you have the money in the bank but want whatever perks the store is offering, be cautious and reasonable.  Interest rates are a money pit and need to be avoided if possible.  Wisely weigh the pros and cons of purchasing with your store card.  A cash budget is best when it comes to fashion budgeting.

Give a little, get a little.
Here is the rule of thumb; if an article of clothing has been in your closet for more than a year, it needs to go.  As you cut down on clutter you will better understand your fashion habits and needs.  You can either give back to the community by donating or consign the clothing.  Some consignment stores will pay cash on the spot which eliminates the hassles of selling your old or unused clothing.

If you spend a little time on these few steps, your wardrobe and your wallet will be in excellent condition.
