Memoirs: Experiences with ghosts

by Carole Ligi

Created on: August 16, 2010

Many people will claim that they are skeptics and do not believe in ghosts.  But at the same time too many down-to-earth credible people have had experiences where the skeptics cannot always be certain with confidence that ghosts do not exist.

I was a down-to-earth person who was neutral on the topic.  I had never met a ghost, but was open minded enough to know that just because I have never had an encounter with something does not mean that it does not exist.

Now I know that ghosts exist because of a Cocker Spaniel that we once had has a pet.  Mitz lived to the old age of 15.  He was a sweet dog with a loving temperament who never met a stranger.

We moved into our split level house in 1988.  The house was in a suburban development.  In the past this entire area had seen many battles during the Civil War.  The most famous battles were the two Battles of Manassas which has a memorial set aside off of Interstate 66 near the current city of Manassas in Prince William County.  While the main battlefield Manassas National Battlefield Park is renowned; numerous skirmishes occurred throughout the county.

We were in the process of renovating the house when strange events started to occur.  Several times while going out for dinner we made a habit of going through the house and turning the lights off before we left for the evening.  Several times, upon returning, we found every light in the house turned back on.  We always investigated to ensure that all the doors were locked and that no one had broken in and we always double checked with each other to make sure that we had indeed turned off the lights.  That was mainly to ensure that we were both sane as we knew that we had left the house one way and returned to it being fully lit.

Then our Cocker Spaniel started acting in an unusual manner.  We frequently saw him sitting at the bottom of the stairs looking upstairs and wagging his tail as if he was interacting with a friend that he knew well.   Or he would be sitting in the living room and sit up as if playing with someone.  The problem was neither my spouse nor I ever saw any person or should I say being.

One day I was sitting in the living room going through the mail after getting off work.  Out of the corner of my eye, I saw our dog playing with someone yet again.  I looked up quickly and
