Is it important to know how to spell?

Back in grade school, I remember competing for my school’s Spelling Bee competition. I made it pass a couple of rounds and suddenly I couldn’t figure out the sound of the word given to me by one of the judges. I spelled it wrong and lost a chance to compete in the state competition.

If I hadn’t regarded spelling as just another game, I would have gone far but like most Americans, spelling is only a means to get by. It is not as important to our everyday situations. Yet, when we write we might be surprise to miss a letter here or unable to sustain the long writings of a page with words that no longer come to our thoughts.

Does that make spelling important than? Absolutely. Without writing which is the main development of spelling properly, our communication suffers. Thus, imagine saying something but because you cannot say it correctly, the spelling also follows. That makes spelling very important.

Talking the Talk but Cannot Spell Right

As we grow older, reading becomes less of a habit as our mouths take over during social gatherings. Spelling much like talking, needs to be practiced consistently. Without it, we might find ourselves stuck on pronunciation.

I’ve met a lot of new business owners who are so adamant with their earnings that reading their billing statement is something they cannot do well. They don’t understand if the information is correct or not. They only look at the numbers. Thus, if they were to write a letter right now explaining to me why their bill was high, they cannot do so because they don’t know how to spell their thoughts properly. They can only talk what they think over the phone.

This is reminiscent of today’s operations in business . The process of outsourcing makes it possible to eliminate anything which we cannot do to someone who can. Doing this allows us to work on what we are good at and what we are not to be fixed. Overall, why learn how to spell when someone else can do it for you?

I find this hard to believe because not only are the owners limiting themselves from understanding what’s the fine print, they’re putting themselves at risk to believe verbal agreement still signs the deal. It doesn’t, text does. That’s the reason why we have lawyers who reads the fine print for us and guides us to actions which we might not have understood otherwise.

So is spelling important? I’m afraid so. It aligns with every thought you may have towards making sense of your own purpose through words. When you can express what you feel verbally, the shift towards text is a matter of practice and proper spelling.
