Abortion is a hotly debated subject; we all know this. Over 3 million abortions are performed annually in the United States. That's a third of the population of New York City every year. Is it murder or national genocide? Does the answer depend on who's asking or on who's answering the question?
Roe vs. Wade is a phrase as controversial as the word abortion. So how do we ask the questions? Which questions are relevant? Because so many natural rights are at stake, not to mention our futurity as a species, let's be specific and let's go slowly. It is more than water flowing under a bridge; we are dealing with the murky silt at the bottom of the riverbed. How do we proceed without kicking up a mess? We can take our cue from nature itself. A crane is a graceful and patient bird. Its sustenance is in the silt, but it stands motionless unless the right opportunity presents itself, or the crane will starve. We can now stand motionless in the river, letting it flow, and step cautiously to find the answers. Killing innocent human lives will only leave us with no future. It is that big of a deal.
Arguments have been made that abortion is strictly a personal issue between a woman and her doctor. Others have been made that the protocols of abortion are reserved to the States to decide. Some have been made that the federal government should never be involved, and Roe vs. Wade shouldn't have made it to the Supreme Court, so the decision is nullified. My view is a little different. Abortion necessarily impacts national population, so the federal government will, at some point, have to have some authority. The federal government is interested in population numbers because it's tasked with protecting the entire citizenry (and their property) from invasion and disaster. Headcount totals invoke the national government. Roe vs. Wade as a court case is valid at the national level. The justifiability of the court's decision is another matter.
