Arizona has three specific destinations that are wonderful for seniors on vacation. Of course, there's also several tourist-friendly amenities in Arizona's major cities (including Phoenix and Tucson). It's a beautiful state, and the warm, dry desert air can feel very invigorating. But choose your vacation dates carefully, because it's painfully hot at certain times of the year, according to
Wikipedia. ("Typically, from late fall to early spring, the weather is mild, averaging a minimum of 60 degrees... The summer months of June through September bring a dry heat ranging from 90–120...")
Obviously, Arizona's most famous tourist attraction is the Grand Canyon. This is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and its a breath-taking site - especially at sunset. Even if you're traveling with grandchildren or families, everyone should enjoy the spectacular view, and it's a way to share a wonderful memory. But besides the observation deck, there's other ways to enjoy the Grand Canyon, and in the past, some tourist services have offered special packages. If you're not up for a burro ride down the trails, there's Grand Canyon airplane tours services which offered an amazing aerial view - and other services even let you look down on the sights while gliding by in a hot air balloon!
But one of the most senior-friendly tourist locations in Arizona is Lake Havasu City. It's got a reputation as a haven for retirees, but besides its restaurants and hotels, the city also boasts an impressive, one-of-a-kind tourist attraction. The famous London Bridge was disassembled in the 1960s, and then transported, piece by piece, from England to Arizona. It was reassembled in Lake Havasu City, and now tourists can see it in all of its glory!
If you're willing to brave a 90-minute drive across the desert, the southern edge of Arizona boasts a fascinating tourist stop: Tombstone, Arizona. You've heard the legends, and the town's stories about famous gunfights have been re-told in dozens of Western movies. But the actual city of Tombstone offers a chance to learn the true history behind the small city's fame, while also reveling in its colorful reputation. There's "saloons" and a local "gazette" selling newspaper reproductions, plus souvenir shops selling cowboy hats. But the museum will remind you that Mark Twain once passed through Tombstone, Arizona, during its heyday as a silver-mining town. Of course, you'll be reminded about the famous gunfight at the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday (and their two partners) stood tall against four gun-toting troublemakers.
And if that's not enough Arizona fun, you can drive up to Four Corners - to see where four different United States come together!
