Health benefits of cherries

When fresh cherries are on sale, it's a sure sign that summer is here, and these tasty fruits are good for you as well. Here are just some of the health benefits of cherries.

Fights disease

Cherries are high in antioxidants, which can reduce the risk of cancer, and in particular, cancers of the organs. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which means they can ease the symptoms of gout and rheumatoid arthritis

Eating cherries is also known to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides in the body, thus protecting against heart disease. Cherries are a good source of quercetin, which is effective in preventing heart disease. The high potassium content of cherries is helpful in treating diseases of the auto-immune system and connective tissues. Cherries also help regulate blood sugar levels, which is good news for diabetics.

Natural pain relief

Cherries are more effective than aspirin in reducing inflammation and relieving pain. Athletes eat cherries to reduce the effects of pain from muscle damage. The anthocyanins present in the fruit are powerful natural painkillers, and can also ease the pain of headaches and fibromyalgia.

Good for weight loss

Cherries are low in calories and high in fibre and water content, which makes them a diet friendly food. Cherries also boost the metabolism, which helps to lose weight. As cherries are sweet, they can also satisfy sugar cravings without adding significantly to calorie intake.

Good for bone health

Cherries contain high levels of boron, which is essential for healthy bones.

Good for digestion

Cherries are high in fibre, so they can help relieve constipation. As cherries are also low in acid, they make a good food choice for people who suffer from heartburn and other digestive disorders.

Aids restful sleep

The melatonin content of cherries promotes restful sleep and helps to minimise the effects of sleep disorders, as well as improving memory function. Melatonin is often used in supplement form to treat jet lag, so a handful of cherries could give you the good night's sleep you need.

Good for anti-aging

The antioxidants in cherries mop up the free radicals which are responsible for cell damage. Eating cherries helps you to look younger by slowing down the natural aging process.

Cherries may be small, but their health benefits are mighty. It doesn't always follow that what tastes good is also good for your health, but where cherries are concerned, you can eat as many as you like, safe in the knowledge that they're good for you.
