The County Fair
Tyler worked all week cutting lawns and cleaning out the family garage. On Friday morning he picked up the phone and dialed Jessica’s number. Her mother answered the phone:
"This is Tyler. Could I please talk to Melissa?"
"Hold on Tyler. I’ll call her to the phone."
A moment later Melissa said, "Hi Tyler."
"Melissa, would you like to go to the fair with me tomorrow?"
After a hesitation, "I would love to. Let me talk to my Mom."
Tyler waited shifting from foot to foot.
"She said okay," Melissa said when she returned.
"Great, I’ll ride my bike over to your house at twelve and we can ride our bikes to the fair."
"It’s a date, so I’ll see you tomorrow then," Melissa said excited.
"I’ll be there. g’bye."
"Bye Tyler."
He hung up smiling. He wanted this second date to be more fun than last weeks movie.
Tyler began to whistle as he worked on the last lawn he had left to do. He liked his new friend Melissa even if his friend’s Patrick and Jacob acted jealous about it. Tyler didn’t care. Summer vacation is starting and the smell of the new mowed grass filled the air as he cut away.
Saturday morning a little before twelve o’clock he pedaled his bike over to Melissa’s house. Her Mother decided to take them to the fair and back in her car. It would be too far to ride their bikes especially if it got dark. She will come and pick them up at the gate around seven o’clock.
They arrived at the fairgrounds at around one and after saying good bye to her mother Tyler paid for their tickets in. They walked hand in hand down the midway checking out the rides. The Zipper was the first one they tried. Melissa screamed all the way through the ride, but she said it was fun.
After a half dozen rides they stopped for corn dogs and sodas. The sun was hot and they headed for the display buildings where it would be cooler. Once inside they found a bench to sit on while they finished their sodas and the rest of their corn dogs. They watched a clown act on the main stage that was a riot. A couple of Melissa’s girl friends stopped to talk to them, but left after they spotted some boys they knew.
Back on the midway Tyler won Melissa a teddy bear after many tries shooting basketballs. When he turned to talk to her, he saw Patrick and Jacob coming down the midway. They tried to avoid them, but Patrick saw them duck behind the tent.
Patrick and Jacob followed them making rude remarks:
"Look at sissy boy
