High blood pressure (hypertension) is the result of too much pressure pushing against the inside of your arteries. The heart sends a pressure wave that is measured using Systolic and Diastolic pressure (eg. 120/80). Anyone over 140 systolic or 90 diastolic has high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is not usually the result of one factor, but the result of many contributing factors.
- diet
- high alcohol consumption
- low frequency of exercise
- obesity
- lack of sleep
- age (blood pressure increases with age)
What can you do about it?
- decrease sodium, sugar, fat intake
- increase exercise frequency (low impact exercises, like walking, at least 3 times a week)
- make sure to get plenty of sleep, at least 7-8 hours a day
- drink lots of water and decrease alcohol consumption
- visit a doctor regularly to help you monitor your condition
