If our society ever values selfishness then I know for sure we are headed for our demise. Selfishness is never an acceptable behavior, it will only lead to a false sense of superiority. There is nothing wrong with a person being self-confident and self assured. Those traits are to be rewarded and emulated.
Selfishness on the other hand is a trait that should not be rewarded or emulated. How often have we admonished our children for expressing selfish behavior, We have all told them that it is nice to share and not be selfish. It would be a mistake to reinforce an act of selfishness. Unfortunately, most of us have exhibited the behavior at some point in our lives, but we learned the errors of our ways.We are far from being perfect.
Uncivilized behavior will only lead to your being alienated by family, friends, coworkers and anyone else who comes in contact with you. There is not one single human being who wants a selfish person as a friend. Selfish people are lonely people because no one wants to be in their company.
A person who is selfish always place their needs before anyone else without ever thinking of the consequences of their actions. Whatever they desire is what's important is their belief. They regard the rest of society as inferior and not worthy of their consideration. They only seek to pleasure themselves at anyone's expense.
Their thinking is illogical and one-sided, and they are concern only for themselves and no one else. The opinions of others is of no value to them, it is their opinion that they themselves most admire.
If we are ones who believe in Christianity, we know that selfishness is considered to be a sin. Christianity would view a selfish person as a "fool admiring his/her own foolishness". I have yet to find a selfish person who is admired by the masses. There is no doubt that some selfish people accomplish great things. But at what cost are these things acquired? Most will fail eventually and end up being humiliated, it never fails.
We should never advocate the behavior of being self-centered or self-absorbed. The act of being kind, responsible, possessing a willingness to share and giving love is what everyone should strive to do. It is the Christian thing to do! It is our duty as people who live in a civilized society to consider the well-being of others as well as ourselves.
