Like most community colleges, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) has small classes and specific degrees that can be earned in a two years preparing the students with credentials for a job or to continue on to an advanced degree in their chosen field.
*- Degrees offered –
Some of the 50 fields of study offered at TMCC include an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science and others. They also offered one year certificates in the fields of dental hygiene and welding.
As an example of future employment opportunities, the Associate Degree in Applied Science could be in the field of Veterinary technician. This degree could open doors after being properly licensed in veterinary hospitals/clinics, drug companies, research facilities and teaching. The demand for veterinarian technicians in Nevada is very high and the degree offers a solid foundation for a continued education for an advanced degree in the veterinarian field.
A degree as a dental hygienist is transferable throughout the country. The students are supervised and trained by professionals in the field and dental assistants are needed throughout the country.
There are many more specialties that prepare students with a solid educational foundation and the skills to be valuable employees in a variety of fields.
* - Campus setting –
The campus is located at 5 different locations with classes and courses offered at more than 40 locations within Washoe County. The High Tech Center offers degrees in Nursing, veterinary technology and general studies. The Dandini Campus has the administrative offices for the college housed at this location as well as a child-care center for students to drop off their children while attending classes. The Meadowood Center offers enrichment courses and professional development. The IGT Applied Technology Center offers degrees/certificates and training in manufacturing, construction, automotive and welding among the many specialties. The Nell J. Redfield Foundation Art Center offers courses and performances in dancing, music and theater.
*- Financial Aid –
Financial aid is available as well as scholarships. As with any college application, students should apply early.
* - Living quarters –
Only the University of Reno offers dorm living. To attend TMCC an out of state student would do well to know the specific areas ahead of time and secure an apartment prior to their first semester. The good news about renting in the Reno or Sparks area is that rentals are affordable and nothing in the area is further than a 30 minute drive in any direction. For students desiring to rent a place in the Reno or “old” Sparks areas, public transportation is easily available.
