The most famous hole in golf

There are lots of golf courses, and there are even more golf holes! So, let us first note that to select which is THE most famous hole in golf is no easy task. However, when you consider which are some of the best known golf courses in the game, then it is possible to narrow down to a few holes that might be considered the most famous hole in golf.

So firstly it is worth noting which golf courses most likely have the most famous hole in golf. Firstly, you have to select Augusta because this is the only golf course that hosts a Major every season. With this, the golf course probably gets more media coverage than any other in the game. As such, some of the holes of Augusta golf course are particularly notable.

Hereafter, for me the other golf course in the US which is regarded as one of the best is that of Pebble Beach golf course. This golf course has hosted a number of top golf tournaments such as the US Open. Therefore, a few of the golf course's holes are considered some of the great golf holes, particularly with its coastal setting along Monterey Bay.

Thirdly, the Old Course at St Andrews. St Andrew's golf course is an historic golf course, widely considered to be the home of golf. Therefore, it has become a beacon for golf fans and players who can play at this fine golf course. The golf course has staged a number of UK Opens, and consequently has a few particularly well-known holes.

From these three great and historic golf courses a handful of holes can then be selected as potentially the most famous hole in golf. Here are three holes from these golf courses that are of particular note:

Pebble Beach: No 7

For a hole short of distance, the seventh at Pebble Beach golf course is surprisingly well-known. Overall, it is little more than 100 yards, but the golf green's unique position on a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean sets the hole apart. Overall, the golf hole is a Pebble Beach treasure and is often photographed.

St Andrews Old Course: No 17

Great golf holes get named, and so the 17th at the Old Course is the Road Hole. The Old Course Hotel extends in front of the tee requiring a tee-shot over a corner of the hotel. Just before the green lies one of golf's deepest bunkers, which is otherwise called the Road Hole Bunker. Then, behind the golf green lies a tarmac roadway for over-hit balls. Overall, this long par 4 hole has been one of the decisive holes in UK Open Championship golf tournaments at the Old Course dating way back into the 20th century.

Augusta golf course: No 12

At Augusta it's a close call between the 12th and the 13th hole which make up the 'Amen Corner' at the Augusta golf course. This is where some of the US Masters are won and lost. Overall, I have gone for the 12th hole at Augusta golf course because of the landmark the hole includes. On this par 3 hole surrounded by Rae's Creek, the Hogan Bridge crosses the creek between the tee and golf green. This is one of the golf courses most prominent landmarks, and so the 12th hole on Augusta golf course is perhaps its best known.

So, these are three of the most notable golf holes at the famed Augusta, St Andrews Old Course, and Pebble Beach golf courses. The 7th, 12th, and 17th holes at these golf courses are perhaps their best known, and so consequently among golf's most illustrious golf holes. For more on this subject, consider this interesting selection of holes.
