Why it is important to have passion for the work you do

It is important to have passion for the work you do since the chances are you spend quite a few hours of your day working and if you are doing a job you hate it can  be difficult to motivate yourself to get up in the morning. When you’re doing a job you hate you can become stressed and start to experience feelings of depression as you are overwhelmed by all the work that you have on your plate. It can also be tough if you don’t get on with your colleagues or if there is poor communication between managers and staff. You don’t want to waste a significant chunk of your life dreading the thought of going to work.

If you have passion for the work you do, on the other hand, you might actually look forward to the early morning starts, as you get to talk to colleagues that you get on well with and complete tasks that you find to be fulfilling and enjoyable. You may have to deal with members of the public, which is much easier to do when you actually enjoy communicating with other people. If you have no passion for helping people and listening to their complaints the hours you spend at work are likely to drag on and you probably won’t come across as the most friendly and helpful member of staff.

Indeed, if you’re not passionate about the work you do the chances are you that you will do the bear minimum that you can get away with and this could make it look as though you are trying to shirk responsibility and that you’re just lazy. This won’t go down well with your colleagues and won’t exactly help you if your aim is to climb the career ladder. If you don’t put any effort into the work you do you probably won’t be able to achieve promotion as quickly as you’d like, which can be rather frustrating and make it even harder to motivate yourself to put any effort in.

Being passionate about the work you do should help you progress in your career as you actually want to take on additional tasks and duties because you really care about helping people or doing whatever it is your job involves. If you care about your job this will be reflected in your work and is going to get you noticed as a hard worker, whereas if you have no particular passion for the work you do it might leave your employers and colleagues with a more negative impression of you.
