The brain is a remarkable organ that can recall in an instant happy times that we shared with our family and friends. Memories help us hold onto our past and are there to bring the experiences back when life may have been easier and innocent. It can occur when we least expect it and it can also happen when a scent or visual brings us back to that special time. Our emotions are awakened and thoughts about the good ol' days make us smile and thankful we were part of that time.
I look back on my childhood with peace and comfort knowing I was lucky to have had good experiences that are part of who I am. My parents helped me to grow and learn about the world around me through visits to the zoo, museums, planetariums, Broadway shows, the circus, the Ice Capades, the park where I froliced and I ate ice cream from an old fashioned ice cream truck. I viewd the scenic areas of our great country on day trips and family vacations. I enjoyed learning and being part of something bigger. I appreciated the arts, and was in awe of the many beautiful things that are part of the world we live in.
I relish in the unforgettable days that are in my heart and mind as a reminder of times past. I sat in the backseat of my dad's Chevy on our family excursions, viewing nature at its glory. Trips to the country as I became acquainted with the many farm animals that are part of nature's landscape. I saw baby animals being cared for by their moms which was something I was able to relate to. I was taken care of by the two people who loved me the most, my mom and dad. I was protected and always felt secure knowing I was loved. I think back on that time and know it was fun being a kid when you did not have the responsibilities of adulthood, which can sometimes weigh down the spirit.
My dad taught me how to swim, as the warmth of the sun and fresh air filled the day with beauty. I liked the feel of gliding through the water as I learned to master the skills of the different strokes. I felt at ease in that environment and use to think I was a fish in another life. I guess I understood that I was never really a fish, even though I was quite happy in that watery enviorment.. I was comfortable and aside from the shriveled skin, I was quite content. Swimming became a passion of mine and the freedom
