It was a crisp, cold November morning when I first met my dog, Jordan. Truly he was an answer to my prayer the night before.
On my own after my boyfriend had passed away I was lonely. It was after the grieving process that I was ready for companionship, but I was not ready to have another human as a companion yet. I love animals and since I was living in a small studio apartment and working, I thought a kitten might be the best pet to start out with. She was very cute and playful and brought me joy, however deep inside I really wanted a dog.
Somehow, the kitten had escaped through the door one night and I could not find her. For a few days I was really was sad and even felt guilty for not being a good pet owner. One night I prayed to God with these words, “God, if it is in Your will that I have a pet please allow me to find the kitten, or even put a dog in my life. You know I am really lonely for companionship.”
The next day my friend had asked me to take her downtown so she could pay a traffic ticket, so around 8 o’clock in the morning I found myself in the middle of downtown Kansas City, Kansas. I live on the Missouri side of Kansas City, so it is a rare occasion for me to be in that area. Dropping my friend off at the courthouse, I drove around the block and saw a little park, so I thought I’d get out of the traffic and wait there until time to pick my friend up.
As I pulled into the park looking for a place to wait, I saw a small brown/black Beagle mix puppy following a business man who was walking briskly holding a briefcase. As the puppy tumbled to keep up the pace, the man looked over his shoulder and smiled. I rolled down my window and asked, “Is that your dog?” he shrugged his shoulders and shook his head “No”. Smiling back, I opened my door and said, “Hey buddy”, the puppy stopped, looked at me, and then bounded up into the front seat.
It’s been almost six years since that cold November morning and Jordan is still bounding up into the front seat of my car any time I ask him if he wants to go ‘bye’. At first I did my duty to find the owner, even as far as taking Jordan to a vet to be scanned for a chip. I did not find anyone looking for this puppy, so I claimed him as mine. In my heart, though, I knew God had answered my prayer.
Jordan was about six months old, feisty, with the propensity
