The rationale behind high-speed rail travel

by Ruth Belena

Created on: August 10, 2010

Support for developing high-speed rail systems is growing around the world. Several counties already have high speed rail systems in operation, and cross boundary routes are being proposed as the next stage in the development of high speed rail travel. The main rationale behind government support for the development of faster and more efficient systems of transportation is how this will improve the economy.

High speed rail travel provides a money saving alternative method of transportation for long distance travelers, and can cut costs for business travelers who would normally fly or drive. Goods can also be transported faster and more efficiently.

The environmental impact of high speed rail travel is of far greater importance, and when more companies and individuals can choose rail travel, in preference to driving or flying, this will lower carbon emissions and reduce the consumption of non-sustainable fuels.

• USA

The US Department of Transport is trying to work towards getting an American high speed rail industry established in the best way possible. The DOT is hoping high speed rail travel will create new jobs and  result in more efficient rail transportation, with a lighter carbon footprint than the present system.

• UK

The UK economy could soon benefit from high speed rail travel, and all the main UK political parties have expressed a wish to support high speed rail travel as a major contribution to maintaining a low-carbon economy.

According to the chief executive of Network Rail, Iain Coucher, as the "low-carbon, sustainable transport of the future," high speed rail travel will reduce the number of domestic flights, and take many cars and trucks off the road.

• Japan

High speed Japanese "bullet" trains are capable of speeds of 150-180 mph. These trains levitate using powerful electromagnets, so they go much faster than any mechanical train running on wheels along metal tracks. Friction between train wheels and tracks limits speed, and traditional railroads are expensive to maintain. MAGLEV (magnetic levitation) therefore cuts maintenance costs in addition to saving time.
