Reasons why you should try to write about what you know

by Jonathan Waagner Jessen

Created on: August 10, 2010

Writing about what you know is quicker and usually makes better articles than the ones the writer had just learned about hours earlier. The writer will often struggle to write the article he/she had just learned about, and that piece of writing that would be the outcome, would have taken much more time to write, than to write on a topic the writer was familiar about.

The writer opens new doors for himself, however, while he writes on a topic he/she does not know much about, but he should first clearly put himself/herself into the topic. That way, the writer would broaden his/her horizon, now being able to write on even more topics than before. That would be great, for both the writer and the reader. However, if one just learns about a subject to write one piece about it, without taking much time to learn about the subject, the piece of writing would not be able to compete with the more experienced writers on the subject.

A writer should always write what he knows about. It is interesting for the reader to read unique information that the reader would not be able to read anywhere else than from the writer. The writer should not just find information for about 10 minutes, and then pushing himself/herself to write a piece about it. The readers could might as well have done it by themselves. What they want is information from people that has putted themselves into the topic. Not saying that for example writing creative writing should be limited to authors and poets- It should just be written by someone with experience on the subject. Many writers find joy in learning about new topics, broadening their horizons, and enrichening their talent of writing.

Learning about a new subject is easy. If a writer reads about it for a few hours, the writer can write as many pieces about it as he wants to. The writer must remember to read from different sources though, to see the different facettes of the topic. If the writer, for example only read about a political subject from a republican newspaper, one would not see the other opinions about the topic. The writer must always strive to read about a topic from as many sources he can get. The internet offers all facettes of a topic, and should therefore be the place that the writer seeked information. The writer should always strive to read. Reading is the key to writing.
