Elderly health: How to keep yourself active

There are many ways to remain active even as you age.  Of course, any physical activity should be discussed with a physician.  Consider the following tips for seniors to help them keep active.

Look for a senior exercise class

If you want to actually get some exercising in, which could be very healthy, then you could consider an exercise class that is specifically formulated for seniors.  These are often called names such as "Silver Sneakers."  They have innovative ways of helping seniors exercise while taking into account their specific physical needs.  For instance, they may have you sit on a chair and exercise that way so that there is no risk of falling.  Others will help to minimize the risk of falling by having the class in water such as a water aerobics class.  If you go to a senior center, then they may have an entire array of classes that are geared towards this age group.  Make sure that you are medically able to do such a class before you begin one.

Walk

It's amazing how much walking can help keep a senior limber and in better shape.  You can walk in a park or even just walk in the store or the mall.  Just moving your muscles can help keep them.  If you walk outside make sure that you take precautions such as sunscreen, keeping hydrated and watching for how hot you become (or cold if it is the winter).

Keep your mind active

It is important to keep your mind active as well.  Studies have shown that using your mind can help you from losing it.  Do mind-challenging games like brainteasers, crossword puzzles and more.  Follow along with a challenging TV game shows like Jeopardy and try to answer all of the questions.  Read books that involve a lot of thinking such as crime-solving mysteries.  Play card games with people.  Talk to others in innovative and riling discussions.

Get out and do things

Sometimes the best way for a senior to keep active is to just get out there.  It can be very easy to get in the habit of just sitting at home in front of the television, but this is often not good for a lot of people.  You can go to a senior center.  They often have classes you can take like ceramics, language learning classes and even sports classes. Just getting out to the grocery store can be helpful.  If you do not want to or can't drive then take a bus or look for a transport service.

It is important for the elderly to remain active.  Consider the above tips to aid in this.
