Recently Britney Spears has been exhibiting some pretty irrational behavior. Over the past few months she has abruptly ended her marriage, partied hard at night clubs for days at a time, shaved her head bald, got tattoos at random, and became violent with Paparazzi. The once level headed country girl has been spiraling further and further out of control, all while the whole world watched in astonishment.
This past week after her state of health was evaluated by doctors, it is believed that Britney is most likely suffering from postpartum depression. An estimated 10% to 20% of women will suffer from this serious mood disorder. 50% to 80% of new mothers will experience a milder form of depression, commonly known as "the baby blues." Unlike postpartum depression, the blues begin one to three days after giving birth and last from a few days to several weeks. Postpartum depression on the other hand is much more serious, and can begin at any time during the first year after delivery.
Although hormonal imbalance is believed to play a role in the illness, no specific cause is known at this time. Many factors can contribute to postpartum depression, such as the pregnancy, delivery, prior mental health, stress, and lack of family support.
It seems highly likely that Britney Spears is indeed suffering from postpartum depression. It doesn't help that the media is focused on her every move. She must be under an enormous amount of pressure. Having two young children so close together is a challenge for any mother, add in being young and having a career, all while the public dissects your parenting skills, and you have a volatile situation. Even a person in a state of perfect health would find it difficult to cope under such circumstances.
It is extremely important for those who are suffering from postpartum depression get help quickly. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms contact a healthcare provider immediately.
Some of the signs and symptoms of post partum depression are:
Agitation
