Tips for writing poetry

When it comes to writing poetry, ultimately it is up to the poet to make their creation into something that is representative of them. No one can tell you the right or wrong way to write a poem, because, as is the case with all creative writing, there is no right or wrong. It depends on the reader, personal preference, and the writer of the poem. Some people write poetry for themselves, others for loved ones. Most serious poets, however, write for the public because they want to share their talent and experiences. No one can really tell you an exact formula for writing what might be considered a “good” poem, but there are a few ideas that can get you started.

Imagery. We all learn about poem imagery in high school, but the concept of images in poems has changed since the times of Shakespeare. In Webster's dictionary, imagery is defined as “mental images.” When you read a poem with good imagery, you can see the situation in your head. You don't have to make up your own story because it is right in front of you. In your poems, you want your reader to see what you are feeling or experiencing. Don't be afraid to use vivid pictures. Don't simply tell the story, show the story. If your poem takes place in winter, don't just say it is winter. Describe the surroundings. Is it a peaceful winter day with the snow glistening in the sun? Or is it a violent blizzard with snow blowing so violently you can't catch your breath? There is a major difference in these two images even though the setting is winter in both instances. It's important for the reader to be able to get a sense of the atmosphere in the poem because it can change the whole feeling and effect of the poem.

Examples. If you want to write an original poem, don't be general. Be specific. You want to use examples that are particular to you. If you don't, your poem can end up sounding like a million other poems. In a poem about love, it is very easy to do this. Love is a feeling many people have felt, and also written about. You want to find ways to make your poem stand out. You can do this by using examples. Maybe there's a specific place you fell in love. If there's a certain restaurant you always went together, use the exact name, because it will add character and originality. Maybe you went on a really special vacation together. Describe the surroundings and write about what you did. Chances are, your experiences will be different than experiences in other poems, so this will make your
