Tips for preparing in the event of emergencies and natural disasters

If a disaster hits, what will you grab first?  Most likely, it will be you and your loved ones in the immediate vicinity.  Next, and if you have time, you may look for items that will make your escape not only possible, but also survivable.  There is good reason to prepare beforehand for emergency events.  You can consider the following items:

Water, make sure your containers will keep the water potable.  Check the stores for bottled water at discounted prices.  If you have the capability, buy in bulk.

Food, buy items that have a long shelf life or nonperishable.  Beans, rice, and trail mix type items are some practical choices.

Cellphones, these little communication devices many would agree are no longer a luxury, but a current necessity. Cell phones have provided much needed information in times of emergencies that saved lives.

Depending on your circumstances, you will most likely have to give thought to further items.  What about your medical history?  Do you have vital medicines that must be taken on a strict routine?

Keep in mind, as you gather these items for safekeeping, you need to check expiration dates. You can change out items as needed.

Maybe not during, but a high probability after weathering an emergency, you will want the ability to recover from a disaster in a timely manner.  Give thought to whatever documents you deem important and put them in a safe waterproof container.  Do you have an easy to carry waterproof bag to store the items?

In the event of an emergency, do your best to stay calm and listen for directions from the TV, radio, or other means of communication through reliable devices with plenty of battery power. There is a possibility of disaster relief groups in the area to provide aid. Try not to panic.  In emergencies try to remember you are not the only one experiencing the disaster.  Despair can make matters worse.  By being calm and alert, it will help you to know when to move, and when to stay in place. You may be of assistance to others around you.

If you look at the response times of the disaster relief group’s around the world you may have mixed feelings. All the same, know that there are people who are moved to action when a disaster strikes.  Are you one of those people? None of us would every want to experience such a calamity; however, we know of the prudence to prepare for such things.  The above information can be a good start.
