Flomax medication is used to treat a benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate. Symptoms of BPH include urinary problems involving poor flow or difficulty urinating. Other symptoms similar to those of a urinary tract infection include polyuria and nocturia. Flomax is an alpha-1 receptor antagonist which helps to make urination easier via relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder. As with most drugs Flomax has side effects, some of which are not serious and can be easily controlled while others can be life threatening.

Although side effects do occur with Flomax, not everyone will experience these. In the majority of cases most men taking Flomax will only suffer minor side effects which will not affect their quality of life. The most common side effects of Flomax include ejaculation problems, runny or blocked nose and dizziness; just under 20% of men experience one or more of these symptoms while taking Flomax. Around 85% of men experience general body pain including back pain while on Flomax while diarrhea and sore throats are common in 6% of Flomax takers.

Less common side effects of Flomax, which occur in less than 5% of men taking the drug include sleep disturbances including drowsiness and insomnia, chest pain, headache, stomach upset, low sex drive, vertigo and vision problems.

Adverse side effects of Flomax can and do occur and must not be ignored. If you notice a rash developing, itchy skin, breathing difficulty or wheezing you may be experiencing an allergic reaction to your Flomax medication.  Severe dizziness accompanied by blurred vision is another reason for concern and an urgent trip to your doctor.  Flu like symptoms may also present as a result of Flomax ingestion. Priapism is a condition which results in prolonged painful penis erection.  If you happen to suffer from any of these adverse Flomax side effects then you need to stop taking Flomax and see your doctor as soon as possible.

Alcohol drinkers should also be warned that the consumption of alcohol may increase the effect of some Flomax side effects. There are also other medications such as warfarin, which may interact with Flomax and increase the likelihood of side effects.

Flomax is a beneficial medication for those experiencing symptoms of BPH. While Flomax has many serious side effects, the benefits of the drug cannot be ignored. If you are worried about taking Flomax you should discuss the side effects with your physician.
