How to bond with a new cat

by Angela Barrington

It was almost 2 years ago, I finally over came my fear of owning another cat. The first cat I had ever owned being on my own went from a loving environment to disaster about 9 years ago. I had became very close to a cat I had taken in at about 8 weeks and only ended up having him for about 2 months. What went wrong still goes unanswered today. He was your average little playful kitten who was at night time a big sook. He would climb onto my pillow each night and curl up to my head for comfort. After about 2 weeks of enjoying this kitten, I started to notice signs that said something was a little weird about this kitten. All of the sudden he thought he was Tarzan or something and would jump from a high point in the room straight to the top of ones head and claw that person for all it was worth! He started to try and rip my drapery down, try to sleep on my newborn babies face at night, growl at everyone that walked through my door as though he was a watchdog of some type and nobody except myself could touch him. He attacked everyone else.

One day, I went to the grocery store and when I had come back, something was not right! There was no growling at the door and no sign of my cat! The curtains were ripped right to the floor and there was a huge hole in my screen door that lead to my patio. (this was 2 stories in the air) I started to call for my cat frantically as he was nowhere in site at all. Suddenly my phone rang. I answered it without knowing that this phone call was going to be a nightmare for me. It was a friend of mine who worked at a call center for numerous businesses. She asked me if I had seen my cat and I had told her that he was nowhere. I explained that I had just gotten back and my cat was gone. She replied that the S.P.C.A. had my cat in their custody as there had been a phone call made to animal control and she took the report. It was a mom of a 12 year old girl who lived in my building telling my friend that her 12 year old seen a lady with my description and my address, throw the cat from the patio and hurt the cat. She claimed that the girl took this cat into her bottom floor apartment to save the cat and need help from the S.P.C.A. She also told them that the lady who threw the cat should be charged with maximum penalty and they would willingly testify against the lady. Since my cat was missing, both my friend and I panicked because all in the report described myself, my location in the building, and my cat as he had distinct markings. Well the panic set in right away, confusion and frustration blurred my vision although I knew I was not even home. I asked my friend what she thought may happen and she said that this would cost about a $75,000 fine or 1 year in prison if I couldn't prove my whereabouts once they investigated. What was I going to do? The good thing turned out to be that the same little girl that had made these accusations had apparently done this before and my friend from the call center verified my reaction and whereabouts for the time this crime took place. The investigation was dropped and than, I had asked the animal control to help me with advice about the prior behavior of my kitten. They said that this unpredictable behavior was usually something that would not go away and they did not feel that my baby would be safe having the kitten in my home. They ended up adopting my cat and come to find out, he became a mascot for the S.P.C.A. I than swore I would never own another cat due to all of the drama this situation had created.

Now, we have owned a cat for almost 2 years and yes I overcame my fear of owning another cat! This cat is the most amazing cat I have ever seen and I have grown to love this cat as though she was a child of my own. She has never been dificult in any way shape or form. Come to find out only a month ago, we noticed she was becoming quite plump. My husband and myself had never dealt with having a pregnant cat before so we of course had asked my cousin who had bred many cats for a litlle advice. She told us what to look for and sure enough, she was pregnant. We confirmed this on February 28th/07 and she wakes us up today, March 3rd/07 and she was crying. My husband and I kept an eye on her behavior and before we knew it, she was giving birth on our bedroom floor! We rushed around to make her a warm bed in the location of her choosing in the room and before we knew it, there was 2 kittens! Wow, I was completely surprised at how well she was taking it for practically being a baby still herself. She was not loud, she relaxed in one spot and before we knew it, there were 4 kittens. She has a lot of trust with my husband and I both and she let me coach her through the deliveries. It was the most amazing thing I had ever experienced and now a days, I have had 4 births myself!

This cat I have now, I have bonded with her now through everything. From her own kitten hood to her motherhood! We tried to make this cat a house cat but did not succeed very well. She had escaped through the screen door about 6 months ago and I felt as though I had lost my best friend! I had felt sick, I cried and I couldn't sleep knowing she was out there and maybe lost. She came home after about 7 days and she clung to me. She slept snuggled into my belly for awhile after that and believe it or not, SHE pet MY hand until she fell asleep every night! Crazy eh? Cats are alto smarter than we think and when you have a cat, rest assure that that cat knows if his or her owner loves them! They will always reward you in the end. I wouldn't trade this cat for nothing!
