Bulletin board ideas for Black History Month

Black history month is an important time commemorating the achievements of many amazing people.  There are many different ways that you can highlight this month with a bulletin board.  Consider the following ideas.

Focus on great African Americans throughout history

You can post the pictures and achievements of groundbreaking men and women such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Obama.  You can focus on as many as you would like.  Besides their pictures you can write down biographical information such as their birthday, where they grew up, what their life was like and so forth.  You can also explore what they did that made such a difference to people.

Focus on amazing achievements by African Americans

African Americans have achieved much.  They have been sports stars, inventors, record breakers, peace makers, trailblazers and more.  A lot of children are not aware of how much African Americans have done throughout history.  You can have the bulletin board focus on these achievements.  For instance, you can place pictures of the inventions that they have been responsible for.  You can write out big facts.  You want the children to look at the board and say “I didn’t know that.”

Get the children involved

If you can get the children involved in the creation of the bulletin board, then they may be more likely to have an interest in it.  Of course, they will also learn as they are doing.  You can have them each do a report on a black historical figure for instance, and then post these on your bulletin board.  You can have them research specific times in history when the black people were not treated well and talk about what life was like for them in that time.  No matter what type of black history theme, there should be some way to include the children.

Make a timeline of important events in black history

There are many important events that changed the course of black history such as Martin Luther King Jr.’s infamous speech.  Make a timeline of these so that the children can see how things have evolved over time.

When you are putting together your bulletin board, you want to make it visually attractive.  You can use wrapping paper, wall paper or even fabric as your background to make it stand out.  You can also use embellishments like sequins, glitter, paper cutouts or other items to make it look nice.  Consider the above ideas when putting together your board.
