When Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997, the entire gaming world was hit with Final Fantasy fever. This gaming fever was more of a pandemic with Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation 1 release alone not including the recent PSN release) selling over 9.8 Million copies as of 2005. Final Fantasy VII had many firsts for developer Square Enix, revolutionizing the standard for Role Playing Game development. Final Fantasy VII was the first game in the Final Fantasy series to include 3-D computer graphics, pre-rendered backgrounds, and was the first game to be released Internationally (among Europe, Japan and the United States). The revolutionary game play that Final Fantasy VII offered kept gamers on the edge of their seat throughout the entire 50 hour ride. The most enticing quality of Final Fantasy VII was its incredibly captivating story line. The Final Fantasy VII universe came alive and left millions of gamers wanting more.
Square Enix answered the call; in 2005 Square Enix brought Final Fantasy VII back to life for fans around the world with the motion picture release Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Advent Children reawakened the Final Fantasy VII flame selling over 1.4 million copies worldwide. However, 2006 brought a serious disappointment to many fans, the PS2 release, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, was met with many mixed reviews. This release was matched with shaky game play and a somewhat bland story. Many dedicated fans of the Final Fantasy VII series were afraid that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII would be just another rehash of the original game.
Fortunately, fans were wrong, developer Square Enix built an entirely brand new experience breathing new life into the Final Fantasy VII universe. In 2007, Crisis Core revitalized the Final Fantasy VII series, taking the world by storm selling 2.1 million copies in only the first two years after release. Crisis Core brings the Final Fantasy VII universe into the palm of a gamer's hands, litterally, being platformed for the PlayStation Portable. Crisis Core serves as a prequel to the original Final Fantasy VII. Crisis Core follows Zack Fair, the character for whom Cloud's (the main character of Final Fantasy VII) alter ego is developed. Crisis Core is an "action role-playing game" that functions like many "Hack-N-Slash" games but with a very in depth RPG twist. Crisis Core entrances Final Fantasy VII players in a story of love, betrayals, bravery and heroism.
