My father's and my own personal strategies for dealing with tough times such as death.
Tough times are going to happen. You can either hide your head and hope they don't hit you or you can lace the gloves up tighter and get ready to defend and strike back. I prefer the latter and have found the following time-tested strategies to be very beneficial in the war of recovery.
It starts with God and it ends with God, bottom line
You MUST start with God and you must finish with God. When no one else can help you through, there is only one that can, and that is our Father in Heaven. You MUST get down on your knees and beg Him for comfort, understanding and courage to battle what you are facing. There is NO doubt in my mind that He has been the one that has helped me when no one else could. You know the times, 3AM, in your bed, and no one else around. You have been there.
Can I prove that objectively to you? No. All I can say is that I have experienced it and it works.
Through God you will develop strategies to help you cope. The following are strategies that God has brought into my life.
Network with friends and family
God will work with you in bringing friends and family closer to you to help you cope. You must let Him work and you must work with him. It is a two way street. You must get on your knees every day and pray for comfort, understanding and courage and in His own way He will help you network with your friends and family in ways you cannot imagine. Why? Because I believe it is in His will. Your friends will be there to listen, to exercise, to enjoy new hobbies and more importantly to just be there.
Get a hobby or a job
With God's help you will need to pray for something to do. Most likely it will be something new and exciting but it doesn't have to be. It could be as complex as learning how to fly or as simple as working crossword puzzles. It might mean getting a job or an additional job. It could be a mixture of activities. Whatever it is, I guarantee you that if you get on your knees and you ask your Father for help, He will bring it to you in one way or another. The new hobby will help you get things off your mind and help you pass your time. All this will heal you over time. Even better, you can experience this hobby with the friends and family God has helped you network with.
