Fired: What to do if you think you were let go because of your age

Age discrimination will continue to happen until we decide to fight against it.  I worked with a guy who was a victim of age discrimination.  He worked with me when we were both "trainees".  People were giving him a hard time because he wore two hearing aids and his glasses were thicker than coke bottles.  Young co-workers of mine kept pushing him into making mistakes which ultimately led to his career demise.

This guy had worked in the coal mines his entire life.  He busted his behind and before he could reach retirement - the mines shut down.  Here we have a man in his early fifties, trying to finish off a long career.  A bunch of snot nose young punks made his job experience a miserable one.

Have you ever had to work for a young punk who thought he knew everything?  I have and it's a recipe for making fat lips!

Today's workforce is not filled with a generation of young people anymore.  The job market is full of retirement-age employees who need to work to supplement their retirement or because it is the only income they have.  Social security probably won't be around much longer, so older Americans are forced to work to prepare for the worst.  In my opinion, it seems as though bosses and supervisors are getting younger, while subordinate employees are getting older.

What would you do if you were let go because of your age?  Age discrimination does exist and will rear it's ugly head in almost all workplace environments.  Arrogant bosses believe that older workers can't perform their duties as well as a young person.  Most would not agree with that statement, because it simply is not true.

How do you fight back if you are the victim of age discrimination?  As soon as you are sure that your termination was a direct result of age discrimination - initiate a grievance through your union [if you are in a union].  If your job does not have a union, file an appeal through the Civil Service Commission [if your job falls under civil service]. If your job does not fall under civil service, you need to retain a lawyer.  There are lawyers out there who will be frothing at the mouth to take your case.

Don't stand idly by if you become a victim of age discrimination.  Retain a lawyer and get back your job today!
